Piccie-wiccies.

Got back from the UK last week, so I thought I should post some photos I took at the British Museum while I was there. I was surprised we were allowed to take photos at all!! The collection was quite impressive, and the way the artifacts were catalogued and presented was pretty interesting as well. I've got a museum map and information booklet I'll bring in to class next time I see you guys. Anyway, it's not much, but enjoy. xx

Head of Augustus, found in Egypt (sorry about the rotation!)
The plaque says the head was decapitated and buried after an attack by armies from modern-day Sudan; an act intending to destroy the head and shame Augustus, but which inadvertently preserved the statue.

check itunesU

I searched for Persian Wars and there are a couple of Universities that have podcasts for the Persian Wars as well as Persian and Greek history - a good idea to consider the wars from the Persian perspective!

In addition, these unis have heaps of stuff on the Peloponnesian Wars - that is what we study after the Persian Wars and you have an essay test on it... get downloading, girls! It is all free!

So I found this video...

It may be useful for anyone thinking about doing the battle of Thermopylae. The website looks like it may have some good information about the Persian Wars in general as well, so you might be able to grab some stuff from it. Enjoy. :)

Have you missed me????

So I'm sitting here on this lovely summer evening in Wimbledon watching the FIFA World Cup, and I just made an interesting little observation.

Remember Nero and his professional clappers? Well geuss what the North Korean Football team has? PROFESSIONAL SYCHRONISED CLAPPERS! How cool!! They even have their own conductor!

Anyway, thought you guys missed my input in class, so i wanted to tell you what kind of school work I've been doing these past few days ... (none except watching professional clappers).

Photo's from the Brit Museum will be up soon, including photos of Ancient Persian armour and weaponary! And of mummified cats, how cute reeooww!
Oh and Ms. O, I got you a present muahaha.

Anyway cheerio, enjoy your holidays.
Love Nadia

(p.s. it just took a lot of will power to not talk more about the wittle mummified cats, i'll save it for when I get back)

Agrippa

Bust of Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa from the Louvre, Paris

Hadrian's Pantheon was built to replace the previous temple that had been built during Agrippa's rule. Hadrian retained the legend M·AGRIPPA·L·F·COS·TERTIVM·FECIT, which means Marcus Agrippa, son of Lucius, Consul for the third time, built this

Caesar in the senate

This clip is from the HBO Rome series. The series is NOT always historcially correct, therefore, you CAN NOT use it as a source in your work. However, you have many primary and secondary sources you can use to verify what you see in this clip.

HI EVERYONE! its Sara and Catherine here :) We just found the fam tree showing the relationship between Julius Ceasar and L. Cornelius Sulla. Thought it may be interesting to know :)

Battle of Cannae

I mentioned this battle today when we were talking about military defeats. I said that 10,000 Roman soldiers were killed. I was wrong..... 50,000 were killed. That is half the Roman army!

This is a nifty re-enactment:

plebeian writers

In light of all you have read so far about patricians and plebeians, why are the historians you know generally plebeians?

Cicero, Juvenal, Martial…… all plebeians.

Why do you think Patricians were not writers? Comments please

(This is Cicero)

copyright and referencing

Some important things to consider....

If you post information, images or photos from the internet onto this blog, I would like you to reference the website you got it from. In brackets, just add the link or the author's name and date if it is from a book. It is no different to referencing work in your assignment. If it is personal (eg your own holiday photos) then make sure they are suitable for view. For obvious images, such as the standard to the left, referencing is not needed. If in doubt, just ask!

welcome

Welcome to 2010!

The final year of your schooling begins today. Are you ready?

This blog is designed to be a space for you to post discoveries you make about the subject you are studying. Specifically, it is a place to include websites, courses, travel ideas, conferences and other sites you find while surfing the net. In addition, you can use it to post some of your favourite photos, images or descriptions of the people, places and events you are studying. It is designed for the "interesting stuff" that falls outside of the "academic stuff" on Blackboard!

To get you started, I have included a link to the British Museum.
